On Thursday evening, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, the expected candidates for the Democratic Party and the Republican Party for President, faced off in the first debate of the campaign for this year’s November 5 elections. Voice of America’s correspondent Dora Mekouar spoke with some voters and brings their reactions to the debate. In all American cities, from New York to Los Angeles, from Michigan to Las Vegas, including passengers on a flight from Minneapolis to Miami, millions of Americans watched the first debate of this election campaign between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.Among groups supporting former President Trump, voters suggested that President Biden’s performance shows he is not fit to be re-elected President.I don’t mean to disrespect the elderly, but Mr. Biden mixes up a lot of words. I don’t think he is fit to be a leader,” says Armani Torres, a Trump supporter in New York, to Voice of America.”I think it’s really hard for any human being to watch this debate and say that Mr. Biden is fit to be our president,” Rosanne Ponkowski, a Trump supporter from Michigan, tells Voice of America.”I think Donald Trump did well. He kept his cool,” says Sandra Bastian, a former President Trump supporter from California, to Voice of America.”He held back quite a bit. I would have liked him to attack (President Biden) more. But I understand that he needs to be polite,” says Jerry Piani, a Trump supporter from California, to Voice of America.Other observers of the debate were disappointed that the candidates did not directly answer some questions, including Mr. Trump s pledge to deport millions of undocumented immigrants if he wins the election.”Former President Trump did not answer the question of whether he would deport 13 or 14 million immigrants, which would separate spouses and children from people who have lived here for 20 or 30 years,” says Domingo Garcia from the League of United Latin American Citizens to Voice of America. Some complained that they did not receive answers about the rising cost of living either.”Under Biden, inflation has increased. Everything has become much more expensive. Things are three or four times more expensive than they were during Trump’s presidency. Fuel prices are very high,” says Charles DiMauro, a Trump supporter from California, to Voice of America. “I think some of the questions are not being answered by the candidates, which is unfortunate,” says Hamton Brown, a Biden supporter from California.A group of President Biden’s supporters in Los Angeles focused on the topics discussed rather than evaluating the candidates’ performances.
